New year, new hair colour

With the recent news that Sheridan Smith has dyed her blonde locks ginger, I take a look back at celebrities who have experimented with hair colour.

Sheridan Smith: The English actress is no stranger to dying her hair. Sheridan has had blonde, brunette and even pink hair in the past. To start the new year off, she has now changed her hair from blonde to a light auburn colour. This isn’t the first time we have seen Sheridan go for a fiery shade though, back in 2012, she opted for a deep copper tone for her hair. Both shades work well on Sheridan, but the lighter tones tend to open her face up more.

Emma Stone: In 2012, we saw The Help actress turn her trademark ginger hair blonde for her role in The Amazing Spider-Man. Since then, Emma has returned to her red shade, saying in an interview for dailymakeover.com that it is probably the colour she prefers. Believe it or not, the actress is actually naturally blonde. Emma can make both hair colours look good, but the red shades do match her skin tone better.

Drew Barrymore: Former child star, Drew has experimented with her hair while in the spotlight over the years. Most recently, in May 2013, she transformed her hair by dying it completely blonde. Previous to this, Drew had worked the dip dye trend with graduated blonde on the end of her brunette locks. Although Drew tends to suit natural looks most, she can really work any colour on her hair.

Kate Winslet: In the 1997 hit movie, Titanic, Kate sported red curls for her role as Rose Bukater. Nowadays, the British actress has blonde hair. Kate’s blonde tones are lifted with subtle highlights which give her hair a gorgeous, natural finish. Kate suits both colours equally, this time I can’t call it.

Cameron Diaz: In 2006 Cameron Diaz was seen with her hair a deep shade of brown at The Holiday premiere. Since then, she has returned to her usual, deep blonde shade and stuck with it. Although being brunette bought out Cameron’s eye colour, the blonde definitely suits her more. Good choice.

Scarlett Johansson: Johansson dyed her hair brown back in 2009 for her role in He’s Just Not That into You before returning to her usual highlighted blonde hair. In recent years though, the blonde bombshell has turned her hair a warm auburn shade for he role a Black Widow in The Avengers. Scarlett looks great whatever her hair tone but blonde or auburn are probably best for her.

Reese Witherspoon: The Legally Blonde star is usually seen with her hair a mid blonde shade. In 2010 she dyed her hair a deep mahogany colour for her role in film, Walk the Line. In 2013, we saw the actress return to the brown shade but the change didn’t last long, and in her latest appearance, at the Golden Globe Awards, Reese had her blonde hair back. Both shades suit the actress, but the blonde Reese has a slight edge over the brunette.

Lindsay Lohan: Teen star Lindsay Lohan started out in the industry with natural, ginger hair. Since then, she has been spotted with highlighted, bleach blonde, dark brown and black hair on several occasions. In recent years though, the actress has returned to a colour which matches more closely to her natural red shade. Lindsay has tried so many looks, but natural is definitely best for her.

Kate Mara: Mara also shocked this week, when she revealed her recently bleached, blonde hair at the Golden Globe Awards. The sister of Rooney Mara, Kate was previously a brunette but chose to make a change and go platinum blonde at the start of the new year. Kate is ahead of the times according to hair trend predictions, which say that platinum blonde will be the ‘it’ colour of 2014. Kate’s blonde hair is bright, edgy and ahead of the times! This is the clear winning look.

Katy Perry: The US pop princess is renowned for experimenting with all kinds of hair colours. Katy has sported deep brown, blonde, pink, purple and blue hair in the last few years before settling back on a deep brown/black shade. With every new colour, the Unconditionally singer seemed to experiment with a new style too. Katy looks gorgeous with every colour she takes on. Another one I can’t call!
